Our Educational Programs

Comprehensive programs designed for children with special needs in Nairobi, Kenya

At Holmeside Care, our programs are meticulously designed to cater to the unique needs of children with disabilities, aligning with Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework for special needs education. The CBC emphasizes nurturing every learner's potential through functional assessment, specialized curricula, and inclusive practices, ensuring no child is left behind. We integrate individualized education plans (IEPs) that focus on competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and self-responsibility. Our holistic approach combines academic learning, therapeutic interventions, vocational skills, and extracurricular activities to promote independence, inclusion, and societal contribution. Programs are available for day and boarding students, with adaptations for various disabilities including physical, intellectual, sensory, and developmental challenges.

Early Childhood Education (Ages 3-6)

Play-based learning for foundational development

This foundational program focuses on play-based learning to develop sensory integration, fine and gross motor skills, basic communication, and social interaction. We adapt Montessori-inspired methods for disabilities, using tactile materials, visual aids, and assistive devices. Activities include sensory play with textured toys, storytime with sign language integration, and simple problem-solving games aligned with CBC's early learning competencies. Our group early intervention program supports children with autism and developmental delays through structured routines and peer interactions.

Key Outcomes:

  • Enhanced self-care skills like feeding and dressing
  • Improved language development using Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
  • Preparation for primary transition with functional assessments
Early Childhood Education

Primary Education (Ages 7-13)

Core subjects with special education adaptations

Building on CBC pathways, this level covers core subjects: Kiswahili, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, with modifications for accessibility. For visually impaired students, we provide Braille instruction; for hearing-impaired, KSL is integrated across lessons. Lessons emphasize practical application, such as using adaptive tools for math manipulatives or science experiments with tactile diagrams.

Specialized Tracks:

  • Autism Spectrum Support: Structured environments with visual schedules and social stories
  • Intellectual Disabilities: Simplified CBC modules focusing on life skills like time management and basic literacy
  • Physical Disabilities: Wheelchair-accessible classrooms and adaptive physical education

We prepare students for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) with accommodations like extended time or oral responses.

Primary Education

Secondary Education (Ages 14-18)

Preparing for KCSE and vocational pathways

Subjects include Home Science, Agriculture, ICT, and Business Studies, adapted to promote self-reliance. We focus on competencies like digital literacy and environmental stewardship, using technology such as screen readers and voice-to-text software.

  • Project-based learning, e.g., community gardening projects tied to agriculture syllabus
  • Career guidance sessions to explore post-secondary options
  • Inclusive assessments ensuring learners with disabilities demonstrate competencies effectively

Vocational Training

Hands-on skills for independence and employment

Hands-on vocational programs equip students with marketable skills for independence and employment. Drawing from Kenyan models like the Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf and Machakos Institute for the Blind, we offer training in tailoring, woodworking, farming, beadwork, and computer literacy. Partnerships with local businesses provide internships, and we align with national TVET systems to make programs inclusive.

Available Courses:

  • Tailoring and Fashion Design: Using adaptive sewing machines for physical impairments
  • Agriculture and Horticulture: Wheelchair-accessible farms teaching sustainable farming techniques
  • ICT and Digital Skills: Training on assistive software for job readiness
  • Woodworking and Carpentry: Modified tools for safety and accessibility
  • Entrepreneurship: Modules on starting small businesses, supported by programs like Employ-Able

Graduates often secure placements through collaborations with organizations like the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).
